ROUND-UP: February 2020

What a great start to the new decade it’s been musically – anticipated albums that have really delivered and great singles putting artists firmly on the radar for 2020.

Here’s some of my highlights so far.

You can hear these and more on the Happy on the Inside Spotify playlist

The Big Moon – Album – ‘Walking Like We Do’

In a little more than 5 years this London quartet have now added two albums of fun, infectious indie-pop to their impressive live shows and have deservedly built a sizeable following. They're having the time of their lives, and would clearly love you to join the gang.

Shopping – Album – ‘All or Nothing’

The trio bring bags of dance grooves and irrepressible energy to the post-punk party on their fourth album. See them live, have a dance – go on, you know you want to.

Gengahr – Album - ‘Sanctuary’

A long time favourite, the London quartet have pulled their most accomplished work out of the hat, having set about the daunting step of creating this album away from the +'s and -'s of label life.

But there's no prizes for the effort alone - this is an album of smart songs which never forget the fun to be had from a hook, and is sounding better and better with every listen.

Asgeir - New album - ‘Bury the Moon’

Deeply rooted in folk, Bury the Moon marries the Icelandic singer-song writer's sincere voice to beautiful melodies and arrangements to provide a surprising, but undeniable, highlight of the year so far.

Odd Morris - single – ‘Cold water’

Another cut of sharp, beautiful guitar and tight driving rhythms from the Dublin band. Fully expecting big things and great shows in 2020.

Jehnny Beth – single – ‘Flower’

Savages’ Jehnny Beth brings a characteristically dark intensity on this track with an electronic-indie-dance edge. Together with the recent release ‘I’m The Man’, this provides plenty of intrigue regarding the direction of Beth’s upcoming album - due 8 May.

Anna Calvi, Feat. Courtney Barnett – Don’t beat the girl out of my boy

Calvi always deserves a mention as a stunning performer, and as an act to add to your gig bucket list for 2020.

Kicking off a promise of a series of collaborations based on original recordings of ‘Hunter’, Barnett is added to the mix on this already great song.

What's there not to like?
