20 for 2020 - Part 2

Here's the next instalment of my pick of emerging artists for 2020:

Odd Morris

This Dublin band's cutting, intricate guitar, driving rhythms and engaging vocals have me hooked. But don't take my word for it - Steve Lamacq no less has paid this 4 strong band more than one compliment and there has already been regular airplay of brilliant single 'Cold Water'.

More on Odd Morris here soon, after their upcoming set at the Windmill, Brixton.

Tracks to try - Cold Water, Lilac Leaves

Arlo Parks

It may not have escaped you that Arlo Parks topped the BBC's Sound of 2020 poll. Critical acclaim aside, Arlo makes this list on the basis of her EP 'Sophie' and more recent single 'Eugene', both of which I have continued to return to time and time again. Combining poetic, rhythmic vocals equally comfortably with beats and band, there is a unique voice here that clearly appreciates storytelling with a melody.

Excited to hear Arlo spread her wings even further this year, she is quite possibly at the start of a very steep rise indeed.

The Mysterines

This three-piece from the Wirral let the music do the talking, maintaining a relatively low profile but having created a big sound that belies the size of the band. High energy, snarly vocals, dirty bass and pounding drums give plenty to bang your head to.

Recent singles and tour dates surely point to a full length album before long; fingers crossed.

Talk Show

Appearing to specialise in riotous, rampaging new wave punk Talk Show are very high up the ranks of the emerging talents from South London right now. This 4-piece are in SW however, and signed to YALA! Records of Felix White (Maccabees) fame, showing that its not just the Brixton & SE cohort making waves. If latest single 'Stress' is anything to go by, Talk Show are likely to standout from the crowd this year.

Talkshow are taking up notable tour slots alongside the likes of The Big Moon and at Ritual Union in Bristol (March), along with their own shows including at the Lafayette, London (April).

Another post-punk gem, hailing from London, Brazil and Spain, this 4-piece's latest single 'California' was a cracker and, along with a growing reputation for excellent live performances, this band has to be seen in 2020.

Ghum perform in the UK regularly, and have been confirmed on the festival line-ups at Tracks (London) and Are You Listening? (Reading); along with the likes of Fat White Family, Shura, Warmduscher and Dream Wife.
